Got'a catch em all

When I was a little kid, around five years old, I got my first game. My first game was for the Nintendo 64 and it was Pokémon snap. The game basically had to do with Oak's grandson going around taking pictures of Pokémon. The main reason I loved the game was because I was able to either out Pokémon to sleep or my favorite, hit them with apples. I would smash that A button for hours hitting Pikachus in their faces. Good old times, sitting their for hours hitting pickachus for hours, made pokemon a very special game for me.

My next game console was the game boy color, and with it I got pokemon red. It was a nice game, I finished it and ended up catching them all ( at the time there were only 151 pokemon). Next was the Gameboy advance, a nice upgrade since it had its on build in light. I got pokemon emerald with it leading me to getting more and more pokemon games. That same year I went trough five Gameboy advances, I record I still hold to this day. I remember trying to beat emerald, and thinking that this was the hardest game I had ever played. This was nothing compared to hitting pikachus with apples, it was a different story, pikachus were beating me up now. The pikachus were finally getting their revenge from the hours I spend hitting them in the face with apples. I finally finished the game a year after my friend lend me his legendary pokemon.

With the remakes of the games that came out recently, I was feeling that nostalgia. I was finally going to play that game that I played ten years ago. When I got the game recently and turn on the game I felt really happy, like a five year old in the holidays.

The little things are what make me happy. You will never know what will make you remember your child hood, like me hitting all those pikachus in the face.

Big Penguins everywhere

Humans are the ones that control almost everything in this world. We have the power to destroy many habitats. Leading to the extinction of many species."Scientists estimate we’re now losing species at 1,000 to 10,000 times the background rate, with literally dozens going extinct every day"(Biological Diversity). If Humans don't stop, at the rate we are going, there won't be many species left in this world. This colossal penguin wasn't killed by humans rather it went extinct because of natural causes

The tallest penguins that are living in Antarctica right now are the Emperor penguins being around 1.1 meters or around 3.6 feet. This is pretty tall for a penguin considering that most of them are really short. followed by the king penguin, humboldt, and the galapagos (NewScientist). The Emperor penguin is tall considering he is a penguin but it is not the tallest of the penguins to ever live. There was once a penguin that lived in Antarctica that was the size of a basketball player. "Palaeeudyptes klekowskii lived 37 to 40 million years ago.", "Acosta Hospitaleche estimates P. klekowskii was 2.01 meters long from beak tip to toes." (NewScientist). This penguin was 6.5 Feet tall, taller than the average American man.

It's amazing how many species were living in this earth. Now all we have, to remember these great extinct species are their remains that they have left behind. The rate Humans are killing species all we will have to remember all these great species will be their remains.

The Day of the Dead

Halloween is awesome holiday were you dress up, and go from door to door asking strangers for candy. I wanted to know if our culture, if Mexico celebrated Halloween. I asked my mom if she celebrated Halloween when she was little, that was a huge mistake.

Dia de los muertos is a celebration in Mexico that starts November first and goes to November 2. It is a holiday were Mexican families honor their dead by making and altar specially for them. Where they put the person's picture in the middle and decorated it with everything they liked when they were still alive. Dia de los muertos is the belief that we get visited by our dead that day. People also put sugar skulls and marigolds in their altar's and in their graves, they even leave possessions of the deceased.

"The historical roots of this celebration date back to the pre-Hispanic cultures of Meso-America of the indigenous people, especially the Nahua (Aztecs, Mayans, Toltecas, Tlaxcaltec, Chichimec, Tecpanec) and others native to Mexico more than 3,000 years."(Day of the dead). The Pan the Muerto or dead bread is bread that symbolizes the old human sacrifices done by the native tribes. To stop people from sacrificing other people for their dead, us Mexicans make this bread that resembles bones of a person and powder it with red sugar, to symbolize blood. It is not a cheap bread since it is made with more eggs and more flour, than any other regular bread. It is super delicious.

I recommend everyone to look up their own culture and see what interesting celebrations or traditions you may have, who knows you may find something really interesting. I know that this tradition is just one of many, for example we Mexicans don't believe in the tooth fairy but in a mouse who comes and takes your teeth.

The sport of the whole world

If you love sports, than you're going to love soccer. Soccer is a sport that is played with 11 players on each team, a ball, and a ref. The simplicity of the sport makes it famous, because all you need is a ball and you are set to play. Soccer can either we watched, played or both.

I personally like soccer, it is my favorite sport. I not only follow my favorite team in mexico, but also other teams around the world. In Germany I follow Borussia Dortmund, in France I follow AS Monaco, in the Netherlands I follow Ajax, in England I follow Liverpool, and in Italy I follow Juventus. There are so many teams in the world that any one can choose their favorite, no matter were you are from.

Soccer is one of the most competitive sports in the world. So competitive that there is even a competition called the world cup, even more famous than the Super Bowl. If your city or state doesn't have a team, you can follow your country. Support it through the rough and hard stages of the world cup. Were every player will be fighting for their country with not only skill but also heart and soul. Soccer is perfect sport for anyone in the world.

The first records of football were in China during the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. In China, it was during the Han dynasty that people dribbled leather balls by kicking it into a small net (History of Soccer). Modern soccer generated in England, were anything was allowed to get the ball to their target, that violence broke out. Forcing King Edward III to banned soccer from England. From than on soccer got famous in schools and later in the whole world, that there were 270 million active players in 2006(Fifa).

Soccer is a huge sport that is played all over the world. A sport that unites men and women, countries, and continents together,"After three years of civil war, feuding factions talked for the first time in years, and the president called a truce. Because the Ivory Coast qualified for the World Cup for the first time. Because, as everyone knows, a country united makes for better cheerleaders than a country divided."(The Soccer Wars). I love soccer, and I know you will too.

Response to "Community Post #1: Exposing Hidden Biases at Google to Improve Diversity"

It seems that racism and sexism is still present and alive but not in a direct way but more in a concealed and private way. People may say that they aren't racist or sexist but they end up judging people by their race or sex. This is not only a problem in the tech world but also in other lines of work. People who are hiring end up judging people by their names or even their looks. People don't know it but they end up being really biased to certain groups and certain sex without even knowing they did it.

Marianne Bertrand, an associate professor at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, did a study to see if having a really white name like Emily Baker, or Brendan Williams or a really Black name like Lakisha Washington or Jamal Jones affected the chances of getting hired. They found out that the authors find that applicants with white-sounding names are 50 percent more likely to get called for an initial interview than applicants with African-American-sounding names. Applicants with white names need to send about 10 resumes to get one callback, whereas applicants with African-American names need to send about 15 resumes to achieve the same result. (Chicago GSB)

In the tech world, men are the dominant sex in all major tech companies. Apple has 98,000 and 70% are male, in Facebook 70% out of 7,200 people are male, in Google 70% out of 48,600 are male, in Twitter 70% out of 3,300 are male, and in Yahoo 62% out 12,200 are male (The New York Times). It seems that people are basing their hiring on their sex, but that may not be the case. Maybe it just happened to be that they had the credentials they were looking for.

People end up judging people by sex and race but they don't know it because its concealed. I think that it doesn't matter if a company is mostly male, or female, just as long as they judge them by their credentials, rather than their race or sex.
